‘365 Ways to Change the World,’ by Michael Norton’

I have decided to not post any more thoughts on suggestions offered by this book. It is not because I don’t like the book – I do like it and think that the majority of the suggestions are worth following up on. I know I will be trying to follow up on many of them.

I think I have provided enough to whet the appetite of all so that those who will want to find out more will go out and buy the book. I highly recommend it.

‘The Pilgrim’s Progress,’ by John Bunyan – in the Wild

I have now registered with BookCrossing.com and I am about to release my first book ‘into the wild.’ I got onto this idea by reading ‘365 Ways to Change the World,’ by Michael Norton.

Releasing the book ‘into the wild’ is simply leaving the book somewhere for another person to pick up.

Changing the World: December 21 – Solar Cooking

Today’s suggestion is about replacing cooking methods that damage the environment and harm the health of people doing the cooking with a much healthier and environmentally friendly method of cooking. This method is solar cooking, which assists in limiting deforestation and desertification, as well as reducing the problems associated with inhalation of smoke on a continuous basis.

Changing the World: December 20 – Wikipedia

Today’s suggestion is about taking part in providing a free online encyclopaedia – which is of course Wikipedia. You can get involved in the project at:

Changing the World: December 19 – Blind Waiters

I won’t dwell too long on this suggestion – not because I don’t want to support the cause, which is to support blind people to find employment as waiters. There doesn’t seem to be an Australian or for that matter, a widely global application of the idea.

In several European cities there are restaurants which are in darkness, giving employment opportunities for the blind and increasing awareness of what it is like to be blind.

Changing the World: December 18 – Helping Africa

One of the most disadvantaged areas in the world is Africa, where so many people live in poverty, along with all of the accompanying issues associated with poverty. It is a tragic situation, which the West can do a lot more about.

Changing the World: December 17 – Street Children Awareness

This suggestion is one that seeks to raise awareness of a terrible situation that is growing and growing around the world. Today there is a growing crisis – street children. There are far too many kids being forced to live on the streets for various reasons.

Changing the World: December 16 – Support the Clown Doctors

Today’s suggestion is about getting behind the ‘clown doctors.’ Who are these ‘doctors?’ These are the people who seek to bring humour to the depressing wards of hospitals, especially for children.

Clown Doctors – a good idea that helps kids in hospital.

Changing the World: December 14 – Sex Strike

Ok, this suggestion appears to be one for the women – at least the examples I’ve read about were all women. I’m not sure that this idea would do a lot.

Changing the World: December 13 – Hunger Banquets

Today’s suggestion is yet another with a website to provide further information. I like the idea of hosting a ‘hunger banquet’ in that it provides an opportunity for a bit of fun, yet increases awareness of a major global crisis and the opportunity to raise some money to help.

Changing the World: December 12 – Buying ‘Good Gifts’

This is a terrific idea – buying ‘Good Gifts.’ The idea behind this suggestion is simply to buy a gift for someone in a needy country via a website and then let someone know you have bought a gift on their behalf. Don’t quite get it? Nevermind – just check out the web site for more information. What a great idea.

Changing the World: December 11 – Share Books with BookCrossing

Now this is an idea I really like, but I won’t spend too much time describing what it is all about and how it is done. I’ll simply say that I’m signing up and looking forward to getting involved with this whole BookCrossing idea.

Changing the World: December 10 – Human Rights

Today is ‘World Human Rights Day,’ so the suggestion for today is human rights awareness. Become familiar with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at:

Changing the World: December 9 – Time Capsule

Today’s suggestion is a very interesting one and is all about preserving memories of our current culture by burying a time capsule. The time capsule is of course buried and dug up at some point in the future by another generation (or more) into the future.

What a great idea and I would suggest a good one for a family to do. Perhaps it could be an extension of a family history project.

Changing the World: December 8 – Helping the Homeless

Today’s suggestion is to assist the homeless by eating out. Sounds strange – but it can be done. Follow the link below for more information – it is a good cause:

Changing the World: December 7 – Light Messages

Today’s suggestion is a rather simple one – to simply put up a small ‘light sign’ to get a message across and raise awareness of an issue. The issue could be ‘peace’ of ‘save trees.’

The message is communicated by making the word/s using a string of lights (fairy lights, etc) and hanging them outside of the house.

This idea is not one I’ll be following up – I’ll do my bit for the environment and not do this one. However, spreading a message via a string of lights can be done – or it could be done by a piece of chalk as with the word ‘eternity,’ by Arthur Stace in Sydney.

Changing the World: December 6 – Tree Dressing

Today’s suggestion is about honouring a tree/s. This one is a little too much like tree worship for my liking, though the idea of preserving trees and planting more – greening the world – is an idea I greatly support.

The actual idea is about dressing up a tree with various decorations and the like in order to honour a tree.

Changing the World: Pledge Bank

Today’s suggestion is about working with others to change the world. This can be done by making a pledge online at the pledge bank. This is a great suggestion and for more information visit:

Changing the World: December 4 – Civil Rights Awareness and Action

The suggestion for today is about raising awareness of civil rights and actively seeking to do something about the rights of people that maybe being abused. Again, this is a very worthwhile cause and is something I would seek to do at every opportunity.
